Info
“Soft Cover” is a 200 x 250 cm contemporary quilt made of printed cotton, appliqués and fleece filling.
It is coated with a pattern of 270 illustrations observing the social reality.
With the quilt I connect traditional quilt art and modern computer technology. The motives were digitally illustrated and then printed on cotton. Afterwards the panels of fabric were sewed together, individual parts were applicated by hand and relined with fleece. Analog to historical quilts and a magazine`s softcover and content, the motives signify the documentation of a short time interval. With the illustrations, the quilt autobiographically displays the daily news that moved me while producing it. It observes the social reality and reflects consumerism, classes, war, politics etc. Inspired by symbols and ornaments of historical quilts, I interpreted and designed plants and animals in a contemporary style and used them to structure the main pattern. Furthermore, historical religious and art symbols give a hint to the ambiguity of the quilt. It subsists on its tension between superficial beauty and morbid meaning.
