3,1 is a homage to Francis Picabia’s Dada magazine 391, founded in Barcelona in 1917. The original magazine comprised 19 issues and included in addition to essays and drawings of Picabia contributions among others of Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray and Tristan Tzara. 391 was published in Barcelona, New York, Zürich and Paris.

To recall the magazine and celebrate the 100th anniversary of Dadaism 3,1 is a collection of typographic interpretations representing the lifeworks of several artists. The title portrays a combination of the original magazine’s title, where as the nine is a comma, and the contributors first two letters of his last name (Pi = π = 3,1…).

The typeface used was designed and developed especially for 3,1. It is inspired by the unconventional typographic design of artists such as Theo van Doesburg and Kurt Schwitters, whose experimentation reflected their fascination with the newly ubiquitous print culture.
