Shaping Trust: A Visual System for the German EUDI Wallet Project

From digital IDs to seamless access to public services, the European Digital Identity Wallet is set to redefine everyday digital interactions – building an open wallet ecosystem and establishing a secure, data-sovereign digital identity. The EUDI Wallet project marks a decisive step toward a sovereign European digital infrastructure built to the highest standards of privacy and security.

Initiated by SPRIND on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Digital Transformation and Government Modernisation (BMDS), the German EUDI Wallet project brought together an interdisciplinary team – including the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), Bundesdruckerei (bdr), Fraunhofer AISEC, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), and Meiré, who contributed the visual identity system as part of the project.

A universal symbol of trust – the Wallet Star

While the EUDI Wallet project is driven by advanced technology, its identity needed to speak with clarity and simplicity. The task was to translate complexity into an intuitive expression of trust in the digital space.
The brandmark begins with an abstracted wallet – condensed into a single form. Arranged in a circle, it becomes the Wallet Star: a simple, legible symbol of openness, interoperability, and variety within a shared European standard.

A Motion Language for the Ecosystem

The identity was created as both symbol and system – iconic enough to represent a new digital infrastructure, yet flexible enough to unfold into a broader narrative. In motion, it introduces the EUDI Wallet ecosystem, its digital hub, and a visual starting point for the future German EUDI Wallet app.

To bring the 3D sequences to life, we partnered with London-based motion studio Daisy Chain.

A New Standard, from Wordmark to Typography

Developing a new standard for digital identification also called for a new visual language: one that feels innovative, more relatable, and capable of moving beyond the familiar codes of government tech. With a future-ready wordmark system and a custom type family, the identity balances institutional clarity with a more progressive public presence.

Encoding Security in Color

Colour became a code for security. Drawing on the green shades of ID card verification features and the iridescent shimmer of holographic elements, the palette translates physical trust markers into a vivid digital system for the logo and beyond.

Creating a Communication Framework for Digital Change

To communicate the full scope of this flagship project, a communications landscape was created that spoke to a wide range of stakeholders – from political actors and global tech contributors to German citizens. Across the website, newsletter, and social media, the identity brought the project to life, made complexity accessible, and invited participation in this cornerstone of German and European digitalisation.
